Ultradent, the US company that makes Opalescence, a dental material commonly used for teeth whitening, has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Japanese chemical company Mitsui Chemicals.
Mitsui Chemicals announced on August 14 (local time) that it had completed the acquisition of Ultradent. When the company first announced the acquisition plan in June, it had targeted completion in September, but the deal closed about a month earlier than planned after antitrust reviews and foreign investment screenings in various countries wrapped up ahead of schedule. Mitsui has not officially disclosed the deal amount, but foreign media including Nikkei Asia reported it at $900 million, or roughly 1.2 trillion Korean won (at the exchange rate of 1,350 won per dollar).
Plans for a Top-Two Dental Materials Group With Kulzer
Mitsui Chemicals identified medical and healthcare business as a high-margin growth pillar and acquired German dental materials company Kulzer in 2013. Kulzer is strong in restorative materials such as prosthetics and fillings, mainly in Europe. Ultradent, on the other hand, sells whitening gels, restorative materials, and clinical instruments together in the Americas market. Mitsui Chemicals said the two companies complement each other geographically and in product portfolio, and that the acquisition would create one of the world's top two dental materials groups. The company relocated its oral care business headquarters to the United States and restructured so that Ultradent CEO Dirk Jeffs would lead Kulzer as well. Mitsui also set a target of generating more than $40 million, or about 54 billion won, in annual synergies by fiscal year 2030. CEO Jeffs said Mitsui Chemicals' scientific expertise and its innovation-driven values were a good fit, calling it an opportunity to accelerate product development and expand its global reach.

Ultradent's Background and Supply in Korea
Ultradent was founded in 1978 by dentist Dr. Dan Fischer in South Jordan, Utah, and makes and sells restorative materials such as adhesives and bonding agents, along with clinical instruments, in addition to Opalescence. Opalescence is a take-home whitening product that has also been imported and supplied in Korea by dental materials distributor Duzon World, and Ultradent had a booth at DENTEX 2026, Korea's largest dental exhibition, held at COEX in Seoul this past January.

There has been no announcement that this acquisition will immediately change the supply method or pricing in Korea. Still, for Korean clinics that import and use these dental materials, the ownership structure of their supplier itself has changed, so if Mitsui Chemicals increases cross-selling by combining Kulzer and Ultradent products, the product lineup or supply terms coming into Korea could also change.
